I earned my GED and once believed certain opportunities were out of reach. Then Adam Mourning at Schlumberger gave me my first real opportunity to lead. He trusted me with the objective and trusted me to get the job done. That was my first lesson in professional ownership.
I got laid off during a downturn in oil and gas. It was devastating, but it forced me to reinvent myself. I started ReSolve Resource Safety Solutions and had to learn sales, networking, team management, customer relationships, and business development. I also learned resilience—and that hard work alone was not enough. I needed people.
My network became one of my greatest assets. Relationships opened doors, expanded my perspective, and connected me to expertise I did not have. I stopped believing I needed to know everything. I just needed to stay curious enough to keep learning and connected enough to know who could help me see what I was missing.
When I first walked into Oklahoma City RIMS, I saw a lot of smart people and did not yet have the confidence to see myself as one of them. But I knew I needed to learn how to network, so I kept showing up. The change was gradual—like working out. Day to day, you barely notice it. Then one day you look in the mirror and realize you are different.
Today, I serve as a Board Member of Central Oklahoma RIMS. One of the rooms where I once wondered whether I belonged is now a room I help lead. Belonging often comes after participation, not before it.
